Delhi to Get Free Wifi and Fibre Optic To Home Network

Delhi CM, Arvind Kejriwal promised us of free Wi-Fi hotspots at public places in Delhi. But so far we only got Wi-Fi at railway stations. In a recent tweet, Ashish Khetan, vice-chairman of Delhi Dialogue Commission(DDC), an advisory body of the government confirmed that Govt has completed free Wi-Fi project and in its final phase to develop 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspot zones at 571 pre-identified locations using Fibre Optic Network in Delhi. These hotspots will be activated by the year end. East Delhi will be the first one to get these Wi-Fi hotspots. So, others will have to wait for a while.

Each Hotspot zone will have 3 access points. 120 people will be able to log in through each hotspot simultaneously. The amount of data will be fixed by TRAI and will be limited to every user. So, if you thought you could download movies just sitting in the park, hold your horses.

Delhi’s Own Fibre Optic Network

The work is carried out in phases. The first phase being the East Delhi phase which is to complete on December 16. It may be called AAMAADMI Wi-Fi. The Govt has decided to get their own Fibre Optic network in the city which ensures high-speed internet. PWD and IT departments will soon start working on Fibre to Home Project. The Delhi Govt’s IT department is the nodal agency for Wi-Fi project and the tender process is soon going to start.

FTTH or Fibre to the Home provides connection speeds of up to 100 megabits per seconds (Mbps) which is 20 to 100 times as fast as a typical cable modem or DSL connection. It is very costly if you are doing it on a large scale as it requires to establish new cable sets.
